About SamiK

I'm a Library Director for a small(ish) Texas town with a desire to share my love of books and the library with my community.

Currently, I am working towards my MLS (Master of Library Science) from Texas Woman's University (my alma mater!).

When I'm not treading through a pile a school work and work work, I make precious memories with both my handsome men at home. Whether we are playing with the sand between our toes, making a campfire, or just taking in a movie at home, every moment is unique.

Bring on 2011!

Wow, how time has flown by! Can New Year's Eve be tomorrow night already???

I'm ahead of schedule this year (usually I'm making my Resolutions List during the second week of the new year). Deciding to get this done early, I have taken a few minutes to reflect on what I would to come out of 2011. Although these are not all of what I expect in the next year, they are some of the most important in my life and career at this moment.

So, here it goes!

Sami's 2011 Resolutions List

Career:
  • Organize and implement a Young Adult area in the library
  • Update this blog weekly
Personal:
  • Spend more time with family
  • Find a hobby
  • Become more self-reliant
  • Procrastinate less
  • Review three books from Flamingnet
  • Read five new authors
  • Read twelve books

Top Ten Tuesday - Favorite Cozy Reading Spot

Top Ten from Bay City Public Library

1. Andrea - Her favorite place to read is in her bed before she goes to sleep.

2. Ann - Besides her bed, she loves her lounge chair.

3. Janet - She loves cuddling up with her furry friend on the couch.

4. Margie - Although she doesn't get a chance to often, Margie loves reading in a window seat.

5. Emma - Finds it comfortable to read in the car.

6. Don - As long as he is in his snuggie, he is cozie.

7. Sue - Her recliner with at least one of her adopted furry friends.

8 and 9. Me - I love to read and in relax in either a hammock when camping or under a tree in the spring.

10. Martha - after visiting with our old director at her new (and impressive) library I had to include her. She said she loves to read in my study with my dog Sammy in my lap.

Putting the extras to good use

This morning was designated as a "cleaning day" to get the Circulation desk back in order. Like any other cleaning project, I went too far. This time led to a new project, which is great, because I love new projects!

Since I started here, we've been giving children, who sign up for their first library card, an activity book and 4 pack of crayons. A welcome kit for kids has been churning in my mind, and today it was realized!

Our new kits are basically made up of our leftovers, but its some great items that were collecting dust in the supply closet and children's closet. Thankfully we had plenty of everything to get the project going.

I made fourteen kits to start off December. Each kit includes a 2008 Texas Reading Club lime-green bag (250 bags just sitting there, wasting away!!!), an activity booklet, a box of crayons, Martha Speaks stickers, a Dr. Seuss bookmark (until we get new ones), a pencil, a library card pocket, decorate-your-own bookmark, and a balloon.

My favorite part is the way the child's face lights up when they see what they get for getting a library card. I can't wait for the first of our new kits to be handed out.
